INDIAN NAVY BEGINS TRIALS IN ₹60,000 CRORE TENDER FOR 6 ADVANCED P75 (INDIA) SUBMARINES
New Delhi:
The Indian Navy has begun trials for building six highly advanced submarines in the country in a ₹60,000 crore tender, as it is working towards the modernisation of its conventional submarine fleet.

Indian Navy has issued a tender to Indian shipyards Mazagaon Dockyards Limited and Larsen and Toubro for building six submarines in partnership with foreign vendors.

The trials began in March this year when a team of Indian Navy visited Kiel in Germany to look at the Air Independent Propulsion system of the German submarine manufacturer ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems at a German Navy facility, defence industry officials said.

The German firm is partnering with the Indian Defence Ministry's shipyard Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for the mega tender.

The second phase of the trial would be held in Spain where Spanish firm Navantia and Larsen and Toubro would be showcasing their AIP system at the June end, the officials said.

The AIP is the most important requirement given by the Indian Navy in the tender as it would give it the capability to stay underwater for longer periods, they added.

Moreover, the Spanish firm would be using the Spanish Navy facilities for the Indian team, they said.

Spain's Navantia and Larsen & Toubro had signed a Teaming Agreement (TA) with the purpose of submitting a techno-commercial bid for the Indian Navy's P75 (India) submarine program.

Additionally, Project-75 (India) aims to procure diesel-electric attack submarines with fuel cells and an Air-Independent Propulsion System (AIP) for the Indian Navy.

The boats would be bigger in size and more advanced in capabilities than the existing boats due to the AIP.

India should go for German subs. Korea got German subs and now building their own subs based on German tech and now selling their own subs to other countries. India squandered that opportunity with both Germany and now France.
Even now it’s not time lost. Use Scorpenes experience as base and build our own SSK.

This deal is more about developing Indigenous capabilities in Submarine construction since PSUs failed. Its less about which foreign company wins the tender and more who will get contract and develop capabilities, Is it L&T or MdL?

Tech wise it's hydrogen cell from siemens and the sub they're offering is in service with 4 navies across the world.
However you never know when the Germs may randomly stop cooperation over some random human rights issue, either before the order is completed or after it is for spare parts and all.

ToT also won't be comprehensive.

Well Koreans learnt from the Germans. We never did. It took us 30 years for Bofors design to become Dhanush. Now Korean Submarine they are selling is an version of German design.

There is another matter Korea is a world leader in shipbuilding. That also helps in military build

We could just go with an evolved Scorpene like Indonesia is purchasing with Li ion batteries. Or we can make our own larger version of the scorpene class with DRDO AIP and Li ion batteries.

Really the only reason for German P-75I is that the IN desperately wants a proven fuel cell AIP for some reason instead of a Li-ion only sub like what Japan has moved on to and France is offering or the DRDO AIP.

I would rather we just continue building Scorpenes and gradually indegenize the design like the Koreans did with the German sub. Finalize the order for the additional 3 Scorpenes quickly and then keep on building more Scorpene derived classes with gradual improvements. The goal should be to build good submarines with the highest indeginous content as fast and in as great numbers as possible. Even if the Indianized Scorpene isn't quite as good as the German T-214 sub I would still rather 12 of the former than 6 of the latter.

Indian Navy likely to drop plans for VLS on upcoming Project-75I submarines in favor of Torpedo-tube launched Anti-ship missiles..

Indian Navy might procure six next-generation conventional attack submarines without a vertical launching system (VLS) plug added to the OEM submarines that are on offer under Project-75-I tender as the focus now shifts to the development of nuclear attack submarines that are already under design and development by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND).

While there is no clear official reasoning behind this decision but most of the submarines other than South Korea’s KSS-3 submarine didn’t have a vertical launching system (VLS) section and adding a plug to the existing design might have complicated center of buoyancy in Korean submarine requiring re-designing of the submarine.

Project-75-I submarines originally were to have a VLS section from where Submarines launched Cruise missile-like BrahMos and Naval variant of ITCM/Nirbhay were planned, but now DRDO and Navy have agreed to instead develop Long-range land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs) and Anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs) that can be launched from torpedo tubes of the conventional attack submarines.

Development of Submarines torpedo launched LACM and ASCM variants of the Long-range sub-sonic cruise missiles have already started and developmental trials might commence in the next two years said sources close to idrw.org. BrahMos, ITCM SLCM, and Hypersonic Cruise missile that can be Vertically launched from vertical launch tubes will find their way in the Six nuclear attack submarines that are in work.
