China's first super carrier starts sea trials amid growing Sino-US rivalry

Built by the Jiangnan Shipyard for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), Fujian was launched on June 17, 2022 and is currently undergoing sea trials as of May 2024.

It is China's first CATOBAR aircraft carrier with a fully indigenous design, an integrated propulsion system and three electromagnetic catapults, unlike the ski-jump flight decks of the previous Chinese aircraft carriers.

Earlier press reports and Chinese media generally suggested that the ship might have a displacement of around 80,000 tons to 85,000 tons. Later assessments, backed by satellite images, suggested the displacement was underestimated, and Fujian might be closer in displacement to about 100,000 tons.

On May 1, 2024, the carrier departed from the Jiangnan Shipyard and began sea trials.

Truly magnificent
Amazing finish
Although catobar with conventional power plant is itself a huge task
If china succeed in effective operationalization then it's would be one of the greatest achievement
Agreed. Nuclear power is necessary. No.20 could be China's first nuclear AC

Professor Ma Weiming now is considered the best of engineers in Chinese history next to Qian Xuesen

Ma has led the development of China's electromagnetic catapult system[3] for launching aircraft from carriers (similar to the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System of the United States), which is more efficient than the older steam catapult system. It is expected to be deployed on the Type 003, the PLA Navy's third aircraft carrier, which would make China the second country to develop the technology, after the US.[3]

In January 2019, Chinese media reported that Ma's team had developed electromagnetic railguns capable of firing projectiles at very high velocity, with longer range and higher accuracy than traditional artillery. Military observers expect a modified version of the Type 055 destroyer to be equipped with the railgun, which would make China the first country to deploy the weapon on an actual warship.[3][5]

While at Caltech, he cofounded NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.[1][2] He was recruited by the United States Department of Defense and the Department of War to serve in various positions, including as an expert consultant with a rank of colonel in 1945. At the same time, he became an associate professor at MIT in 1946, a full professor at MIT in 1947, and a full professor at Caltech in 1949.[3]

Be it emals or catobar power requirement is huge
I am not saying Chinese wouldn't have worked upon it
But it would be interesting to look how it turns out to be

Too much talk is about aping Chinese navy; knowing fully well that the Chinese Aircraft carriers are coastal vessel only built for defence and offence against Taiwan and American forces present in and around China sea. Going high seas and deep is not Chinese culture. Even in their that role, they have no capability to survive a highly experienced and agile American Navy in the area.

Chinese aircraft carrier in offensive mode will never come into Indian Ocean and survive a 4,000 km journey when they know that Indian Navy is waiting with its full might. No they know this fact and know Indian Brahmos missiles and its capability on aircraft carrier Armada. Hence, intimidation is the key to Chinese perfidy but they will never pick-up a fight.

What India needs more submarines and nuclear powered attack submarines. Both of these are high priority in the Indian Naval circles.

Yes, these are defensive systems and China needs to saturate its home waters with ships to establish sovereignty.

Chinese ships and aircraft have had literally thousands of intercepts and confrontations with US and allies in the air and sea around China. Not single intercept ever between Chinese and Indian mil planes or ships :)

So I have no idea why the Indian navy need to worry about China when the US and other Western powers operate many more ships with absolute inpunity all around India.

I think you Indians just like to shake your fist at someone in the next town who you know can't reach you but ignore the actual bullies in your own neighborhood like USN because you are afraid you cannot stop them anyways ;)
