I wonder, was they ahead only GDP. Never heard of them talking about on budding institutions like we do about ISRO or nuclear research... So other than GDP were they ahead in any field.

IIRC, they became a free market country in the '50s and '60s when they joined the US led bloc (at least a freer economy than most of Asia at the time) which means the average Paki had better access to foreign commodities than most of Asia. So, I guess if you count the diversity of products available, they could've been ahead but that came at a cost that they are still paying for today. Their nascent industry was destroyed as they couldn't produce products that were superior to those coming from first world countries and many sectors of their economy is dominated by foreign companies that achieved it more or less in this era.
