In the end, you may call the civilisation whatever you like, but you cannot discredit archaeological data without evidence. For archaeologists, till the Harappan folks don’t wake up from their graves and tell us their true identity, we will continue to call it the Harappan Civilisation.
Dark Age refers to the gap in archaeological / material evidence for the period between the collapse of the Harappan civilization in late to mid 2nd millennium BCE i.e between 1900 -1400 BCE ( depending on the area excavated ) to 800-700 BCE - the period known as the second urbanization in Indian history aka the Mahajanapada period.emphasis on disproving "dark ages" theory in Indian history, by ASI people these days.
"dark age" is supposedly a period in India where the culture didn't progress, this used to be the claim based on lack of archeological evidence. haven't looked into this fully, but this is what i understood.

As long as we can't excavate sites in central & eastern UP as opposed to western UP , Haryana , Eastern & SE Punjab & Eastern Rajasthan , this will be a persistent bugbear for Indian archaeology & history .emphasis on disproving "dark ages" theory in Indian history, by ASI people these days.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lahuradewa#cite_note-4The site is noted to have been occupied as early as 9,000 BCE,[1] and by 7,000 BCE it provides the oldest evidence of ceramics in South Asia.[2][3]
Excavations reported earliest archaeological sites in the world for cultivation of rice, with Lahuradewa Period IA giving samples that were dated by AMS radiocarbon to the 7th millennium BCE.[4]
