Lost opportunity. BMP Urban Survival Kit (BUSK) for protection of Sarath IFV is developed by Vehicles Research and Development Establishment . The light weight solution which can be fitted on quickly can give extensive protection during urban operations. Was unveiled in 2012!
Will need to see how effective this is against ATGMs. Concept seems fine but implementation is often faulty with these sort of fixes.

Army seeks Anti-Tank Guided Missiles for its Mechanised Infantry Arm
The RFI is looking for Indian vendors who are capable of supplying Fire & Forget ATGMs along with Launcher Systems which can be fitted on BMP-2/2K and produced in India under license, within three years of signing the contract.

n its efforts to further enhance firepower along its borders with Pakistan and China, Indian Army is looking for Infantry Combat Vehicle launched Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) and has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for the same.

The RFI which has been issued earlier this month is for the procurement of around 5000 Fire & Forget ATGMs along with around 500 Launcher Systems that can be adapted on locally built BMP-2/2K ‘Sarath’ infantry combat vehicles (ICVs).

The RFI is looking for Indian vendors who are capable to supply Fire & Forget ATGMs along with Launcher Systems which can be fitted on BMP-2/2K which are produced in India under license, within three years from the signing of the contract. And they should be able to supply 1750 Fire & Forget ATGMs along with 175 Launcher Systems each year.

What is mentioned in the RFI?

The document which is available in the public domain specifies the ATGMs which are capable of top and direct attack modes have a 125 mm caliber, less than 1.25 m in length, and should be 25 kg in weight. These missiles should have the ability for direct and top attack modes to fire at a minimum range of 200 m and 1,100 m, and at a maximum range of more than 5 km.

These ATGMs should be capable of penetrating at least 650 mm rolled homogeneous armour equivalent (RHAe) and explosive reactive armour (ERA).

As part of its modernization of the Mechanised Infantry, Army has plans to equip it with the Fire and Forget Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs), state-of-art missiles and also lethal capability beyond visual range (BVR).

As the most versatile arm Mechanised Infantry brings to battle a protected Infantry component. And this is directly supported by lethal and precision firepower which is provided by BMP-II. Over the past four decades it has excelled in different terrains and operations from the deserts of Rajasthan, plains of Punjab to high altitude areas of Eastern Ladakh & Sikkim.

Financial Express Only has reported that the Army is to acquire the Canister Launched Loiter Munition System that too has to be integrated on BMP II/ Carrier Mortar Tracked (CMT) chassis.

Kalyani of India offers upgraded BMP-2 with new armour and Rafael Samson Mk II weapon station
Kalyani of India offers upgraded BMP-2 with new armour and Rafael Samson Mk II weapon station.
The Indian Company Kalyani Group presents at Defexpo 2014, defense exhibition in India, a solution to upgrade the Russian-made BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle with new armour and fire power. The upgraded BMP-2 of Kalyani features front, side, skirt and rear passive and reactive armor and one Israeli-made Rafael Samson Mk II mounted on the top of the vehicle

The Company offers a low cost solution to upgrade basic variant of BMP-2 with new armour. The front, rear and side of the vehicle are fitted with passive and reactive armour to increase the protection against modern threats of the battlefield as armour piercing rounds, IEDs and RPG (Rocket-Propelled Grenade).

With its Israeli partner Rafael, the Indian Company has integrated the RAFAEL’s Samson Mk2 unmanned remote weapon station. The new turret is more lighter that the original BMP-2 turret which reduces vehicle weight and increases space inside the vehicle.

Like its predecessor, the Samson Mk II is a dual-axis, gyro-stabilized, dual-sight (Gunner and Commander) remote-controlled weapon system capable of mounting multiple weapons.

The Rafael Samson Mk II turret mounted on the Kalyani upgraded BMP-2 is armed with the 30mm automatic cannon from ATK and two anti-tank missile launchers Spike LR.

SPIKE-LR feature a fiber optic data communication link that provides the gunner with the unique ability to attack hidden targets, update or switch to a more valuable target after launch, achieve pinpoint precision, avoid friendly fire, conduct surveillance/damage assessment, and obtain real-time tactical intelligence. SPIKE-LR has Fire and Forget and Fire capability and can engage targets at up to 4000 m.

The Rafael Samson Mk II turret offers significant improvements, including lower silhouette, optional armour protection, and improved hit accuracy, boosted crew survivability with under-armour reloading, increased rigidity and higher gun elevation capabilities.

The Samson Mk II RWS boosts crew survivability by eliminating deck penetration. Additional crew protection is provided by a dedicated Rafael patent-pending in-hull reloading system. And for the vehicle itself, Samson Mk II RWS’s low-silhouette geometry enables the host platform’s surfaces to easily accommodate protective armor ranging from STANAG Level .1 to 4

The turret includes also two optronic sights MiniPOP (Plug-in Optronic Payload), one for the gunner and the other, providing an independent sight for the commander. Plug-in Optronic Payload (POP) is a modular, compact, competitively priced gyro stabilized day / night observation, surveillance and targeting system.

NOTES
The BMP-2 (Boyevaya Mashina Pyekhoty-2) has an all-welded hull and a three-man crew with the driver seated at the front left, the commander to his rear and the gunner at the turret. The vehicle is amphibious, being propelled through the water by its tracks.

The elevation and ballistic characteristics of the BMP-2's 30mm, dual-purpose automatic gun enable it to engage helicopters and low-flying, subsonic fixed-wing aircraft at an effective range of 3,000 meters. The gun's suppressive fire range can be extended to 4,000 meters, depending on the type of ammunition used. An antitank guided missile launcher atop the turret can employ AT-4 Spigot or AT-5 Spandrel missiles to engage slow-flying or stationary aircraft. The launcher can be removed from the vehicle and employed while dismounted.

The BMP-2 can use engine exhaust or the six 81mm smoke grenade projectors mounted on the turret to generate screening smoke.

The BMP-2 has thin armor that protects it from .50 caliber armor-piercing rounds only over the 60° frontal arc and 23mm ballistic protection within the turret. It is extremely vulnerable to antitank guided missile, 30mm, and tank fire. The engine compartment and ammunition storage area, fuel cells, and troop compartment are located so that penetration anywhere on the vehicle will result in a mobility, firepower, or personnel kill.

The BMP-2 was first seen in April 1981 with Soviet forces in Afghanistan. It also appeared in the Zapad-81 exercise in the Soviet Union in September 1981. Initially identified with the STANAG designator BMP M1981, the vehicle has the actual Soviet designator of BMP-2.

VARIANTS
A French SNPE explosive reactive armor (ERA) kit and others are available for use on the BMP-2. However, during dismounted troop movement, ERA would be a hazard. Thus, passive armor is more likely and ERA application is doubtful. For amphibious use, additional armor application is unlikely. Other options are spall liners, air conditioning, and a more powerful engine.

Russian AG-17 30mm automatic grenade launcher modification is offered for BMP-2.

Russian KBP offers a drop-in one-man turret, called Kliver, with a stabilized 2A72 30mm gun, a 4 Kornet ATGM launcher, thermal sights, a coaxial 7.62mm MG and improved fire control system.

French-German Flame-V adaptor kit permits the BMP-2 system to launch Milan, Milan-2, and Milan-3 ATGMs.

Thermal sights are available. The Russian SANOET-1 thermal gunner's sight is available. The Russian Trakt/1PN65 thermal imaging (TI) ATGM night sight is optional. Acquisition range is 2,500 m (NFI). For the launcher in dismount configuration, the Slovenian TS-F ATGM night sight is available and has a detection range of 4,500 m and recognition range of 2,000 m. The Russian Mulat/1PN86 lightweight TI ATGM thermal sight has 3,600 m detection range and 2,000 m identification range.

BMP-21980. Original production model. See data above.

ATGM load consists of one ready on the launcher and four stowed. They are readily accessible, but require hand loading from an open hatch. The AT-5 and AT-5B are more likely than AT-4 and AT-4B.

Recognition features:
  • Tracked vehicle.
  • Six road wheels.
  • Low circular turret with long, thin gun.
  • Low silhouette with pointed nose.
  • Ribbed area on front of vehicle.
  • Two rear hatches on top decking.
  • Two doors in rear hull.
  • Three smoke dischargers on turret side.
  • Vision ports on hull.
  • Amphibious.
